Ancestry is my favorite online research tool for building a family tree. It is worth it to have a paid subscription and they often have discounted membership options a few times a year.

Newspapers.com is a wonderful site and I highly recommend the publisher extra subscription.

This research site is put out by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It is an excellent resource. Sign up for free at familysearch.org

Previously Rootsweb.com, Ancestry's message boards are a wonderful resource for anyone looking for specific information on a person or place. Search by location or last name and then search within a message board for a specific name, date etc. You can also post a message and ask for help from other users.

The US National Archives has many great resources that may aid in your research. 

Family Tree Magazine's website has free links, resources, articles and more that will aid you in your research. And you can subscribe for a print version of the magazine delivered to your home. 

The Library of Congress has some great history gems! Look at their holdings available online. I have found that they are a great resource for maps. 

If you don't have an ancestry.com membership, you may find information on your ancestor in this free database of city directories. Happy hunting! 

Cyndi's List was started by an amateur history detective who realized that it would benefit others to have a resource directory all in one place. Although it can be a little daunting to navigate, I have found some amazing resources here and it is well worth your time and effort to puruse the links Cyndi's List has.
